Kei Nishikori successfully defended his U.S National Indoor Championship title with a victory over Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic on Sunday afternoon. The Japanese No. 1 earned a straight sets victory to lift him back into the Top 15 in the Emirates ATP Rankings.

The current world No. 16 defended the Memphis title he won last year, when he defeated Feliciano Lopez in straight sets, with another two-set victory over Ivo Karlovic. It was a relatively close encounter, with a break separating them in the first set and a 7-0 tiebreak closing out the match in the second set. The Japanese No. 1 withstood 20 aces from Karlovic and saved two break points to close out the match 6-4, 7-6(0) in 90 minutes.

Nishikori takes home $103,100 and 250 Emirates ATP Ranking points and is poised to re-enter the Top 15. Karlovic garners $54,300 and 150 Emirates ATP Ranking points.

“It was a good week for me,”Karlovic said following the match. “I’m really happy with the way I played. I hope I will continue like this and by the end of the year get into the Top 40.”
