A highly awaited second round match takes place tomorrow afternoon at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament between French No. 2 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and world No. 37 Marin Cilic. This marks the fourth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Cilic leading the Head-to-Head with 2-1.
World No. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was back to his winning ways in Rotterdam, where he defeated Germany’s Florian Mayer in the opening round. The Frenchman hit 10 aces in his 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Mayer, which sets up an entertaining clash against Marin Cilic. Apart from reaching the fourth round in Melbourne, Tsonga has only taken part in one other event all season: the Davis Cup tie against Australia, where he earned a straight sets victory over Lleyton Hewitt.
Just 48 hours removed from his title win in Zagreb, Marin Cilic is back in Rotterdam, where he won his opening round match against Lukas Rosol 6-2, 6-2. While the first few games were tight, it was a relatively straightforward victory for the Croatian, ,who used his big serve to force the errors from his opponent.
“In the first couple of games it was about getting used to the conditions,” said Cilic. “I then started to mix up my returns and he made some critical errors. I served very well and it was a solid match. Last week helped me a lot, playing five matches in a row at home. It gave me a lot of confidence. I always like playing indoors and I hope to continue to improve my game.”
The win was Cilic’s 10th win on the tour this season, having reached the quarter-final in Brisbane, the second round in both Sydney and Melbourne and capping it off with his fourth title win at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors. He will look to carry forth that momentum into his next match against Tsonga.
Not only does the Croatian holds a 2-1 lead the head-to-head series against Tsonga, he also holds the most recent victory – a tight straight sets victory in Miami last year. The Frenchman’s only victory over Cilic came in Cincinnati in 2011 and he will need a strong performance tomorrow to reach the third round in Rotterdam.
