The U.S. Tennis Association announced its team on Wednesday, saying that the No. 1-ranked Serena Williams and American No. 2 Sloane Stephens would not take part in the USA Fed Cup tie against Italy. The USTA revealed that Williams has a back injury, while Stephens is suffering from a wrist issue.
The U.S. Fed Cup squad will include inexperienced players such as Madison Keys, Alison Riske, Christina McHale and Lauren Davis. World no. 37 Madison Keys is the highest-ranked member of the U.S. team and will be making her Fe CUp debut along with Riske and Davis.
The Italian team will also be missing their top two players for the first round tie. Both Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci had requested to skip the event, citing a gruelling schedule in the weeks leading up to it. No. 45 Karin Knapp, No. 84 Camila Giorgi, Nastassja Burnett and Alice Matteucci now make up the Italian squad.
The Fed Cup tie takes place between Feb. 8-9 at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio.
