Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal overcame the test from Lukas Rosol in their first meeting since the Czech stunned Nadal in the 2nd round of Wimbledon 2012. The World No. 1 began his 2014 ATP World Tour season with a straight sets win 6-2, 7-6(7) in 1 hour and 43 minutes. No doubt Rafa would have had some nerves heading into this what would usually be a routine first round match. The World No. 47 tried his usual tricks to get inside his opponents head but his shots didn’t come off enough and despite Nadal letting him back in the 2nd set he was defeated in the tie-break. He now goes on to face Tobias Kamke of Germany in round 2.

David Ferrer had to overcome a very stern test from former top 20 player Alexandr Dolgopolov as he prevailed 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in an entertaining match of 2 hours and 4 minutes. The World No. 3 now goes on to the German Daniel Brands who beat Nikolay Davydenko in his 1st round match.

Andy Murray made a dream return to the ATP World Tour with a very routine 6-0, 6-0 win, outclassing the home man Zayed in just 38 minutes! The two-time champion in Doha impressively won 20 out of 20 points when he made his first serve in. The Brit will play Florian Mayer who overcame Prysiezny in three sets earlier on today.

The 5th seed in the tournament Richard Gasquet defeated Kevin Anderson comfortably in the end 7-5, 6-1 in just over an hour, while there were also wins for yet more Germans, qualifier Dustin Brown, 6th seed Philip Kolschreiber and Peter Gojowczyk. Ernest Gulbis managed to finish strongly against Britain’s qualifier Daniel Evans 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, firing down 9 aces on the way to victory.

Stand by for yet more exciting and entertaining 2nd round matches tomorrow and perhaps shocks on the first day of 2014!..
