An interesting second round contest is set to take place tomorrow afternoon between world No. 9 Angelique Kerber and Klara Zakopalova. The two competitors will meet for the third time in the main draw on the professional tour, with Kerber leading the head-to-head series 2-0.
Germany’s Angelique Kerber has had an average start to her 2014 season. The 25-year-old began her season in Sydney, where she defeated the likes of Dominika Cibulkova, Kaia Kanepi and Madison Keys before losing to first-time winner Tsvetana Pironkova in the finals of the event. She followed it up by reaching the fourth round in Melbourne, but was halted by Italy’s Flavia Pennetta, who ended her run in Australia.
As the fourth seeded player at the event, Kerber received a bye to the second round, where she will now meet world No. 34 Klara Zakopalova for just the second time on a hard court surface.
Czech Republic’s Zakopalova also managed to reach the finals of a pre-Australian Open warm-up event, as she strolled past Alison Riske and Samantha Stosur, amongst others, to reach the finals in Hobart. She would eventually lose to Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, but it was a phenomenal effort from Klara to reach that stage of the event after facing such difficult obstacles.
The world No. 34 began her week in Paris with a straight sets victory over local favourite Caroline Garcia. The match ended with a 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 scoreline, which secured a second-round date with world No. 9 Angelique Kerber.
This marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour. While Kerber leads the series 2-0, both her victories came on grass courts, while Klara’s has managed a hard court victory over Kerber, but at the qualifying stage of an event back in 2007. While that is not likely to factor into their match tomorrow afternoon, it will be interesting to see if Klara will have an answer to Kerber’s strength and accuracy on court.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber in Three Sets
