British No. 3 Heather Watson officially qualified for the Brisbane International main draw with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Jarmila Gajdosova earlier today. The win secured her a main draw spot, where she will compete against three of the top four players on the WTA tour in Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova.
A turbulent year for Watson, the former British no. 1 dropped to world no. 121 this season and was plagued with glandular fever for a significant portion of the year. This led her to make a major coaching change, as she would split with coach Mauricio Hadad and begin a new partnership with Diego Veronelli, ahead of the 2014 season.
The Argentine has been working with the 21-year-old in London since mid-December in preparation for the Australian Open, where she will will have to qualify to make the main draw.
