WTA Championships 2013 Istanbul Red Group
Second Match Of The Day
If Angelique Kerber (Player Profile) is to make the semi-final stage of the WTA Championships, a straight sets victory over Agnieszka Radwanska (Player Profile) is vital to her chances. Check out the Radwanska v Kerber Head to Head.
Radwanska is virtually out after suffering straight sets losses in both of her matches this week. Petra Kvitova was impressive in the first match against the Pole, winning 6-4 6-4 with early breaks enough for the Czech in both sets while the inability to convert break chances cost Radwanska. She converted just 1 break point of 8 in the loss while against Serena Williams it was a similar story. Two break chances in the opening game went unconverted and Serena would take control from thereon eventually winning 6-4 6-2.
Kerber won two fewer games against Williams, losing 6-3 6-1 in what was an outstanding performance from the World No.1. As with Radwanska’s match, early breaks for Serena put her in charge and she never relinquished that lead. After a lengthy game to begin the second set in which Serena broke, the match got away from Kerber very quickly and she would win just 1 point in the last three games.
Both players will be happy to play someone close to their level after comprehensive beatings from Serena and this match is a tough one to call. Radwanska is 3-1 in their last four meetings although it has been a split in 2013. Kerber was a winner in Tokyo with Radwanska winning in Beijing the very next week, both in straight sets.
With more at stake for Kerber, the advantage has to be with her with qualification still possible should she win here and defeat Petra Kvitova in the final rubber.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber in three sets
