Maria Kirilenko

The second group stage match taking place at the 2013 Garanti Koza WTA Tournament of Champions is between Russia’s Maria Kirilenko (Profile) and France’s Alize Cornet (Profile). This is the second time they meet in 2013, where Cornet came out on top in straight sets. The Russian will be looking for her fist WTA win over Cornet. Check out the Kirilenko v Cornet Head to Head.

The World No. 18 has had a decent year on the tour having reached her first French Open quarterfinal and her third overall slam quarterfinals before losing to World No. 2 Azarenka. She also reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, where she lost to Serena Williams and the third round of the US Open before losing to Simona Halep. Her worst performance at the slams this year came in the first round of Wimbledon, where she lost to Laura Robson. This marks the Russian’s second appearance at the Tournament of Champions in Sofia. She is coming off a loss in the opening round in Moscow and will be looking to end her season with a strong showing in Bulgaria.

Alize Cornet qualified for Sofia by winning her first tournament title of the year at the Internationaux de Strasbourg where she defeated Lucie Hradecká. She is making her debut at the Garanti Koza tournament and she will be looking for strong performances at the season-ending tournament. She has had a successful year on the tour, as she re-entered the top 30 in the rankings and reached the third rounds of the Wimbledon Championships, the French Open and the US Open.

Cornet holds a 3-0 head-to-head record over Kirilenko, dating back to a first round Wimbledon win in 2007. She followed it up with a win the following year in Linz and then another hard court victory this year in Toronto. In the three encounters, the Russian has only ever taken one set off Cornet and that was five years ago. It will be interesting to see if she is capable of making tomorrow’s contest competitive.
