The last of the round robin matches in Istanbul on Friday night was played between 7th seeded Sara Errani (Player Profile) and 8th seeded Jelena Jankovic (Player Profile) of the White Group. These two players have only met once, way back in 2010, when the Serb won a very tight match in Indian Wells. Because of Na Li’s win over an injured Vika Azarenka in the first match of the day, Jankovic automatically goes through to the semis too. In any event, Errani had no chance of making the semis, having lost both her first two matches – against Li and Azarenka.
Errani got the match going but Jankovic broke immediately, followed by a break by Errani and a hold of her serve. She broke again to lead 4-2 and held for 5-2. Jankovic then held and broke Errani when she served for the set to trail 4-5 but the Italian closed out the set at 6-4.
She started the second set and games went with serve. Errani managed to hold serve after a very lenghty 7th game and subsequently break her opponent for a 5-3 lead. Despite Jankovic saving two match points when Errani serving for the match, she dropped serve in the very next game with the Italian converting her fifth match point after a superb rally.
However, it is Jankovic who secured her place in tomorrow’s semi-final against Serena Williams. The other semis will feature Petra Kvitova and Li Na.
