Maria Sharapova (Player Bio) may have missed the US Open due to injury, but no one can ever say that she doesn’t know how to court publicity. The Russian player has been appearing on a bevy of TV shows in the US to promote her brand of sweets, but it was an appearance at New York fashion week that really got the gossips columnists talking. Sharapova was photographed at the event with a rather flashy looking ring adorning her left hand, on the finger traditionally reserved for engagement or wedding ringsand this really sent the fur flying.
Newspapers and websites the world over began speculating as to whether this was the first sign of the Russian beauty planning to tie the knot with Bulgarian boyfriend and ATP tour player Grigor Dimitrov (Player Bio), who she has been dating since 2012. The ring did not look like a traditional engagement ring and this poured a degree of cold water on the story before Sharapova herself seemed keen to kill it stone dead.
When interviewed by American TV and radio host Larry King, the Russian world number 3 responded to a question about the ring with the uncompromising answer of ‘I am not getting married, not that I know of.’ There doesn’t seem to be much doubt about that then but the rumours are likely to continue regardless, as the press can’t seem to get enough of tennis’ newest power couple. The couple have hardly been away from the media glare since getting together, with a venomous exchange between Sharapova and Dimitrov’s ex-girlfriend Serena Williams proving a particularly tabloid friendly story.
So, despite the story being quashed by Sharapova for the moment it is a certainty that the rumour mill will go wild again, if and when the two do decide to get serious.
