The player is currently ranked 182nd on the ATP Tour, and is the highest ranked amongst the Chinese players. Last week he reached the semi-finals of the Shanghai ATP International Challenge and was granted a wild card entry into the Shanghai Masters by virtue of his playing in the Challenge tournament.

Interestingly Federer and Zhang almost faced each other in the second round of the 2012 Masters event, but Zhang went on to lose to Lu Yen-hsun in the first round.
Also playing at the event is current World Number 1 Novak Djokovic, 2013 US Open Champion Rafael Nadal and World Number 3 Andy Muray. The first day of the tournament is open to the public for free, and ticket prices for the remainder of the event range from 160 Yuan to 1580 Yuan.
