Del Potro wrist injury – Can the Argentine Davis Cup team still beat the Czechs?

Share & Comment

Juan Martin del Potro’s wrist injury that he was suffering from during his US Open match against Lleyton Hewitt sidelined him from this week’s Davis Cup semi-final tie against Czech Republic.

Argentina will find it a lot more difficult to fight their way through the solid playing Czechs Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek. At the time of writing this article, the Czech team earned themselves a 1-0 lead after Stepanek’s straight sets victory over Juan Monaco, prevailing 7-6 (3) 6-3 6-2. Leonardo Mayer will try to level the score as he takes on Berdych (the current score is 1 set all), but should he fail to do so, it is only very hard to see the Argentine team reaching this year’s final.

The Czech captain Jaroslav Navratil relies on the singles matches and let’s the ‘Big Boys’ rest for the doubles (Jiri Vesely and Lukas Rosol are set to play). Even if Mayer manages to upset Berdych, you have almost got the feeling that the Argentine pair Carlos Berlocq and Horacio Zeballos will need to prevail in tomorrow’s double to give their country a fighting chance to play for the title.
