The second of two all seed matches in the quarter-final stage, (6) Feliciano Lopez (Player Profile) plays (3) Milos Raonic (Player Profile) in what most likely will be a match low on breaks given the serving ability of both players. Raonic vs Lopez Head to Head: 1-1.
With a possible meeting against Richard Gasquet in the semi-finals, Raonic will be keen for the chance of revenge after his defeat at the US Open by the Frenchman. However, it is no gimme for Raonic that he advances after making surprisingly hard work of Marinko Matosevic in his opener. Raonic scraped through in three sets, breaking the Australian’s serve just once in the whole match. And that sole break happened at the very end of the set 3 as Matosevic failed to hold while serving to stay in it, with Raonic taking the match 7-6 4-6 6-4.
Meanwhile, Lopez has been going about his business quietly with two straight sets wins to make it to this stage of the tournament. Talented Serbian prospect Laslo Djere fell to a 6-3 6-3 defeat while Go Soeda made it a bit tougher but would still go down 7-6 6-3.
In his only other event indoors this year, Lopez made the final of Memphis where he was defeated by Kei Nishikori. While the result against Matosevic suggests Raonic is there for the taking, it feels like the Canadian will always have the edge against non-elite players indoors, especially against other strong servers. Raonic should progress but it may go all the way as he looks to extend his head to head over Lopez to 2-1, the most recent meeting coming at the US Open this year where Raonic won in four.
Prediction: Milos Raonic in three sets
