Thailand Open Round 2
Centre Court 12pm local

2012 Thailand Open champion Gilles Simon (Player Profile) comes into this second round match in good form as he looks to defend his title. Simon won the Metz title last week without dropping a set – defeating three of his countrymen along the way. Kenny de Schepper and Nicolas Mahut were defeated in the second round and semi finals respectively before Simon pulled off the shock win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final – still mightily impressive despite the lack of match practice from Tsonga coming into the event.

Meanwhile, Bernard Tomic (Player Profile) doesn’t quite have the same momentum behind him. After two wins in Davis Cup, Tomic opened the tournament here against Ivo Karlovic. The Croatian won the first set 7-6 but would end up having to retire in the third when Tomic was up a break. Although losing the first set, Tomic can take heart from the fact he wasn’t broken once – saving all three break points early in the third set from 0-40 down.

Simon leads the Head to Head against Tomic with 1-0.

For a player who many berate as far too defensive, Simon has a surprisingly good record on indoor surfaces which favour offence although the Frenchman is extremely competent on the surface as last week shows. It was the 11th title of his career and the fourth indoors as he improved his record in finals to 11-4, an extraordinary record by anyone’s standards.

Tomic’s career indoor record is poor to date with just six wins, including the aforementioned retirement victory this week. It would be a surprise to see him pull off a shock against the more experienced Simon who is full of confidence right now.

Prediction: Gilles Simon in straight sets
