World no. 3 Andy Murray (Player Profile) revealed last week that he would not be participating in the Thailand Open and would be sidelined due to a minor back surgery.

The British no. 1 underwent a procedure to solve an ongoing issue with a disc in his lower back. He is expected to miss the rest of the season, including the Barclays World Tour Finals at London in November.

Murray tweeted a photo of himself after the surgery, informing fans that it was a success and that he was to begin the recovery process.

Murray first sustained the injury in May at the Rome Masters and was forced to pull out of the French Open. He returned in top form at Wimbledon and won the Championship in historic fashion yet the injury continued to linger and bother the 2-time Grand Slam champion. The problem affects a nerve in Murray’s lower back which sends shooting pain down his hip and upper leg, and affects him more on clay and hard surfaces than grass courts. The problem flared up once again at the US Open and has been a consistent bother since then.

While he did lead his Davis Cup team into the World Group with a win over Croatia, it appears the effort was simply too great on his back as he withdrew a mere days after the conclusion of the Davis Cup and opted for the minor surgery.

Murray is expected to return to training in November and will be ready for the first Grand Slam event of the 2014 season.
