The organisers of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati have their dream final to look forward to on Sunday, as top seeded Serena Williams (Bio) will take on 2nd seed Victoria Azarenka (Bio) to do battle for the trophy and title. In the first of the semis Serena played 5th seeded Na Li – last year’s champion – and eventually came out on top 7-5 7-5. Serena took commanding leads in both sets before Li fought back strongly. In the first Li won four games on the trot to come back from 1-4 and serve for the set, but double faulted when she had set point and Serena clawed her way back to take that game and then the set on her serve. Leading 4-2 in the second set, Serena again lapsed and allowed Li three games on the run. Li against served for the set at 5-4, but Serena came back to the next two games to again take the set at 7-5.
2nd seed Victoria Azarenka fought for almost two hours and ten minutes to overcome the challenge of 14th seed Jelena Jankovic late at night. In a match characterised by double faults – Azarenka’s 11 to Jankovic’s 9 – the Serb took the first set 6-4. Azarenka came out fighting in the second set and took it relatively easily 6-2 and continued the momentum in the decider, which she won on a fine cross court drop shot 6-3.
