The round of 16 wrapped up on Thursday night at the Premier Level Rogers Cup being played this week in Toronto. 42nd ranked Magdalena Rybarikova, who won her first two rounds against unseeded players in straight sets, took on 2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, who had a first round bye and then won her second round match for the loss of only three games. The first set was close, going all the way to a breaker which Rybarikova won 7-5. Bartoli had to retire with an abdominal strain while trailing 0-1 in the second set.

10th seeded Italian, Roberta Vinci, played 20th ranked Slovak, Dominika Cibulkova, who has had a good run in this tournament. She defeated a qualifier in straight sets in the first round and in the second round she came from a set down to knock out 8th seed Angelique Kerber. Vinci had a tough three setter against Julia Goerges in the first round, then lost just four games in her second round match. The Italian had won her last five matches against the Slovak, but Cibulkova worked very hard to get this victory. She took the first set 6-3 relatively easily, then had to battle back from 3-5 down with two set points for Vinci to eventually force a breaker which she took 7-4.

Petra Kvitova, the 6th seed, met 12th seeded Aussie, Sam Stosur, in the bottom half of the draw. Kvitova had a first round bye followed by a straight sets win in the second round. Stosur came back from losing the first set in both of her first two matches before meeting Kvitova. With her serve not working, Stosur had little chance of taking this match, which the hard hitting Czech won 6-3 6-3.

The last third round match saw the 27th ranked Romanian Sorana Cirstea do battle with 15th seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic. Cirstea won her first match with the loss of just five games, then won a three set nail biter against 10th seed Caroline Wozniacki in the second round. Jankovic battled against a qualifier in a three setter first round match and then won in straights in the second round. It took the Roumanian an hour and twenty four minutes to move into the quarters with a 6-3 6-4 win.
