Frenchman Gael Monfils upset 5th seeded Milos Raonic of Canada in the first round of Gerry Weber Open in Halle, beating him in straight sets 6-4 6-2.

Monfils took Raonic’s serve in the third game of the match and this proved to be the key for the outcome of the first set. After breaking the Canadian once more in set two, the Frenchman never looked back, setting up a second round match against Jan Hernych, who ousted Daniel Brands 6-4 6-2.

Also through to round two is Ernest Gulbis of Latvia, who overcame former Wimbledon semi-finalist Marcos Baghdatis 6-4 3-6 6-3. Next up for the Lavian will be no.3 seed and last year’s winner Tommy Haas of Germany.

Elsewhere, lucky loser Mirza Basic, who is playing his first main ATP draw, stunned Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz, defeating him in three close sets 7-6 (5) 3-6 7-6 (5).
