31 year old Spaniard Feliciano Lopez has won the ATP Aegon International at Eastbourne, beating second seeded Gilles Simon in three sets to win his first career grass court title. The two will meet again in a couple of days and Simon will have a chance to avenge this loss as the duo will clash in the first round of Wimbledon next week.

The pair split the first two sets in tie-breakers before Lopez ran away with the third set 6-0 to win his third career singles title. The match lasted two hours and 48 minutes.

Lopez is ranked no. 39 in the world and has now won nine of ten matches on grass heading into Wimbledon, where he has had the best results of his career. Lopez had reached the quarter-finals at SW19 three times so far.

The match was played under windy conditions which made it difficult for both players to produce quality tennis.

Conditions were so tough but we did our best. Hopefully at Wimbledon we can play a better match. It’s funny to play the same guy in three days. But this is tennis, and sometimes these things can happen. I can take feedback from that into Tuesday. I’m very happy to win my third title. It’s a great feeling — good for me, for my game, for my confidence for the rest of the year.”

Simon was happy to reach the finals after injuring his ankle earlier in the week. “It was horrible for me — I had everything. I was so sick. I twisted my ankle. I felt terrible on the court in the first match, but I’m just happy that I managed to get through at all.”
