Last week Caroline Wozniacki lost in the first round of the premier level Matua Madrid Open in the first round and history repeated itself this week, when she again lost in the first round of the Internazionale BNL Italia premier level tournament being played in Rome, in the build up to the French Open. In Madrid the Dane lost in two quick sets to Yaroslava Shvedova, but on Tuesday in Rome the 10th seed lost to 48th ranked Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia in three sets which took three minutes short of three hours to complete. Wozniacki took the first set 6-2, Jovanovski the second 6-4 and the Serb the decider in a tie break which she won 7-5. Next up for the Serb is her countrywoman, Jelena Jankovic.
13th seeded Roberta Vinci, playing on home soil, had a titanic battle against the 33rd ranked Russian, Elena Vesnina. Going into this match, the Russian lead the head to head 4-1, but the Italian fans helped Vinci to get through to the second round. The Italian dropped the first set on a tie break 7-2 but took the second equally close set 7-5 to force a deciding set, which she managed to close out at 6-4 in a match that lasted one hour and fifty seven minutes. Her second round opponent will be the Italian wild card, Nastassja Burnett.
Another seed who had a real battle on her hands was number 14, Slovak Dominika Cibulkova. She played her first round match against Kristina Mladenovic of France, ranked at 43. This match also went to three sets, with Cibulkova losing the first set 6-1 but regaining her composure to take the second 6-2 and the decider by the same margin. She will next face off against Melanie Oudin.
