In the first of the two semi final matches on Saturday, top seed Serena Williams took on seventh seed Sara Errani. In their quarter final matches, Serena dropped the second set to love against Anabel Madina Garrigues – only the sixth time in her entire career that that has happened to her – before edging the Spaniard 7-5 in the decider; while Errani lost just seven games in her straight sets win against Ekaterina Makarova. Both players held their opening games, but Errani broke in the third game to lead 2-1. Serena managed to break the Italian in the 6th game to level at 3-3 but Errani broke straight back. Games went to 4-4 and 5-5 before Williams took the set 7-5. She then started the second set and each player won her first game. Serena then went on a three game run to lead 4-1 when Errani held, but the American ran away with the last two games to take the set 6-2 and move into the final.

2nd seeded Maria Sharapova took on the fast improving Ana Ivanovic, seeded 16th in this tournament. The Russian won all her matches to this stage in straight sets, while the Serb had two very long and tight three setters on her route through the draw. Ivanovic began the match and games went with serve until the 5th game when the Russian broke for 3-2 and the led 5-2 before Ivanovic took two more games. Sharapova eventually took the set 6-4. Ivanovic ran up a 2-0 lead in the second set, but Sharapova broke back to 3-3, despite her really bad serving stats – six doubles to three aces to this point in the match. Leading 4-3 on her serve, the Russian held and broke Ivanovic to take the set 6-3 and make yet another final.
