Serena Williams defeats Azarenka and wins Rome title

The final of Internazionale BNL Italia tournament took place on Sunday afternoon in Rome between world number one Serena Williams and the 3rd seed, Victoria Azarenka. In devastating form on the red clay, Serena only lost ten games in all her straight sets wins on her way to the final, whereas Azarenka gave away fourteen in two straight set and one three set wins, although one win was due to a retirement.

Williams broke Azarenka in the very first game and again in a long third game to lead 3-0. Azarenka broke back for 1-3, but despite long games and numerous break points on both sides of the net, Williams went on to a 5-1 lead with Azarenka serving to stay in the set, but the American broke again to wrap it up 6-1 in forty six minutes. Williams started the second set and games went with serve until Williams broke in the eighth game to lead 5-3 with her serve to come. She made no mistake and took the set 6-3 and the title in an hour and thirty three minutes.

In a turn up for the books and disappointment for the Italian fans, the doubles title went to Su-Wei Hsieh of Taiwan and her partner, Shuai Peng of China. They beat the top seeds and world number one team, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci 4-6 6-3 10-8 in less than an hour and a half.
