Slovak 14th seed Dominika Cibulkova faced off against the American 93rd ranked qualifier, Melanie Oudin in the second round of the Internazionali BNL Italia tournament on Thursday afternoon. The Slovak took out Kristina Mladenovic in three sets in the first round, while her opponent got the win against Ekaterina Makarova when the Russian had to retire in the third set of their match. Oudin made a great start and took the first set 7-5, but the tiny Cibulkova, despite serving eight double faults during the match, ran away with the second set 6-1 and the third 6-3 to move into the third round, where she will take on Serena Williams.

9th seeded Aussie Sam Stosur won her first round match against Su-Wei Hsieh with the loss of only five games. In the second round she played against the 38th ranked Chinese, Shuai Peng, who had beaten Monica Niculescu in three sets in the first round. The Aussie made hard work of the first set, allowing Peng to go ahead twice before breaking back and forcing a tie breaker, which she took 7-5, before strolling through the second set to love. Her next opponent will be 8th seed Petra Kvitova.

In a match between two Chinese players, 5th seeded Na Li took to the court to play Jie Zheng, who is ranked 50th. Li had a bye in the first round and Zheng won in straights against Magdalena Rybarikova. It took Li just short of an hour and a half to roll past her compatriot 6-1 6-3 to set up a meeting with Jelana Jankovic in the third round.
