Serena and Venus Williams had to play two matches each on Friday at the Family Circle Cup for the organisers to get the tournament back on track after rain washed out play during the day on Thursday. Venus was first to play her second match, against another American, the 77th ranked Madison Keys. Keys had three straight sets wins over unseeded players to reach the quarters, while Venus had a bye and two three setters. Allthough Keys managed to get an early break in both sets, age and experience prevailed, with Venus taking the match 6-4 6-4 in an hour and ten minutes.

Top seed Serena took on the Czech 6th seed Lucie Safarova who had a first round bye, a straight sets win in the second round and a three set battle against 11th seed Sorana Cirstea in the third round. Safarova has never beaten Serena and Friday’s match was no different, as she took game, set and match 6-4 6-1 in just an hour and sixteen minutes to move into the semis where she will face her sister for the twenty fourth time in their careers – but this will be the first time they will face off against each other on green clay.
