Serena Williams beats Giorgi in Charleston, Barthel out

Serena Williams made the switch from the hard courts of Miami to the clay courts of Charleston with relative ease when she took on the young Italian, Camila Giorgi, in the second round of the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday. Williams had a bye in the first round, while 85th ranked Giorgi had a straight sets win over Mandy Minella in the first round. In both the first and second sets Giorgi managed to get to 2-2, but in the first Williams then raced through the set 6-2 and in the second she allowed Giorgi just one more game before closing the set at 6-3.

The American 27th ranked Vavara Lepchenko who is the 12th seed in this tournament took on the 81st ranked Mathilde Johansson of France in another second round match. Johansson and Lepchenko had both battled through tough three setters against Melinda Czink and Christina McHale respectively in the first round and this encounter also went all the way. Lepchenko eventually took this see saw match 6-1 4-6 6-1 in almost an hour and three quarters on court.

The 29th ranked 8th seed from Germany, Mona Barthel, took on the virtually unknown qualifier from America, Jessica Pegula. The young American took out Garbine Muguruza in a hard fought three setter in the first round, while Barthel had a bye. In this second round match it was Pegula who got the better of her much higher ranked opponent, toughing out a 7-4 first set breaker before cruising through the second set 6-1.
