The second round of the Porche Grand Prix clay court tournament kicked off on Thursday in Stuttgart with seeds Na Li, Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova and Nadia Petrova all in action in the afternoon session. The only seed to fall was Petrova, the 8th seeded Russian, who was beaten in straight sets by world number 17 Ana Ivanovic of Croatia. Petrova beat a qualifier in straight sets in the first round, while Ivanovic took out the German wild card Andrea Petkovic, in straights. Ivanovic won her second round match 6-4 6-3 in just an hour and twenty minutes.

2nd seed Na Li of China opened proceedings when she took on the qualifier from Croatia, 103rd ranked Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the first match of the afternoon and Li made light work of her day at the office when she swept aside Lucic-Baroni 6-1 6-2 in just under an hour and a quarter. Li had a bye in the first round and Lucic-Baroni overcame Elena Vesnina in straight sets in her first round match.

Czech 5th seed Petra Kvitova had a real battle in her three set first round win against wild card Anika Beck and she replicated the story in her second round match against Germany’s Julia Goerges, currently ranked at 30, who got to the second round when Kirsten Flipkens had to retire,. The home favourite took the first set easily 6-2, but Kvitova fought to take the second set to a breaker, which she won 7-4. With the momentum firmly on her side of the net, Kvitova raced away with the third set 6-2 to move into the third round.

3rd seeded German Angelique Kerber had a bye in the first round and then met Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who had had a marathon three set battle against Ekaterina Makarova in the first round. It took the German just fifty five minutes to win her match 6-0 6-4 and move into the third round.
