Italy beats Czech Republic in Fed Cup semis

In the Fed Cup semi final being played on red clay in Palermo, Italy, home player Sara Errani went on court to play Petra Kvitova, to try to close out a 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic, while Kvitova was playing to keep her team alive in the tie. On Saturday Errani beat Lucie Safarova in straight sets and Roberta Vinci took out Kvitova by the same margin.

In the first set on Sunday afternoon, Errani ran up a 5-0 lead, but then she allowed Kvitova two games before wrapping up the set 6-2. In the second set games went with serve until the 5th game when Kvitova got the first break, to go 3-2 ahead and she did not drop another game to take the set at 6-2. In the decider Kitova broke Errani in the first game and although the Italian fought bravely, the Czech did not lose a game to take the set to love.

The second match, played on Monday morning because rain put an end to play on Saturday, was between Roberta Vinci and Lucie Safarova. A win for Safarova would level the tie at 2-2, whereas a win for Vinci would seal the deal for Italy. Vinci got the first break and went on to lead 5-2 in the first set and take it 6-3. In the second set the Italian got an early break but Safarova managed to level and then break again in the 9th game for 5-4. Vinci broke back and held for 6-5 but the Czech forced a breaker which she won 7-2. In the decider Vinci broke for 5-3 and made no mistake in closing out the set 6-3 to take Italy into the final.
