The women’s tennis fans at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells did not get to see either of the two quarter final matches scheduled for Thursday, as injuries hit the 1st and 7th seeds, causing both of them to withdraw.

The first quarter final should have been between 7th seeded Aussie Sam Stosur and 4th seeded German, Angelique Kerber. Stosur damaged a calf muscle at the very end of her fourth round match and even though she did everything possible in order to take to the court, the injury proved too severe. Kerber is now into her second semi final of 2013, but her run in Indian Wells has been pretty easy, the highest ranked player she met on the way was Yanina Wickmayer who is ranked at 32, so she will have to up her game when she faces Caroline Wozniacki.

The second match was to have been between Wozniacki and top seed Victoria Azarenka, but Azarenka had to withdraw with an ankle injury that has plagued her throughout this tournament. Wozniacki won the title here in 2011 and goes into hre semi leading the head to head against Kerber 3-2, although the German has won the last three times they have played.
