Dutch wild card holder Igor Sijsling beat no.3 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first round of the World indoor Tournament in Rotterdam, prevailing in three hard fought sets 7-6 (3) 4-6 6-4.

Sijsling will face Slovak Martin Klizan in the next round, who eliminated Frenchman Paul Henri Mathieu 6-4 3-6 7-5.

Meanwhile, Tsonga’s countryman Gilles Simon, who is the 5th seed at this year’s ABN Amro Tournament, advanced to round two with a straight sets 7-6 (3) 6-4 win over German qualifier Daniel Brands. Both players exchanged two breaks each in the first set before Simon managed to regroup and clinch the ‘breaker’. After the French player managed to take his opponent’s serve once more in set two, he never looked back, wrapping up the set and the match.

Next up for Simon will be Italian qualifier Matteo Viola, who overcame Marcel Granollers of Spain with a 5-7 6-3 6-1 scoreline.
