In the first of Friday’s quarter final matches at the Qatar Total Open in Doha, the 3rd seeded Russian Maria Sharapova took on Sam Stosur of Australia, the tournament’s 8th seed. Going into this match Sharapova led their head to head stats 11-2, with Stosur having won in straight sets in both the WTA Championships in 2011 and in Tokyo last year. Sharapova’s rejigged serve keeps on improving and in this match she served twelve aces and seven doubles, to Stosur’s single ace and three doubles. The only stat where the Aussie was better was on her second serve and this led to an easy win for the Russian who took game, set and match 6-2 6-4 in just over an hour and twenty minutes.
The third quarter final match was between 2nd seed Serena Williams and 7th seed Petra Kvitova. The Czech started proceedings and got a break to lead 5-2. Serena held for 3-5 before Kvitova served out the set at 6-3. The second set went much the same way, with the result that Williams took that set 6-3. In the final set Kvitova started and got an early break to lead 4-2 but yet again Williams broke back to 4-4. Williams broke again to lead 6-5 and served out to take the set 7-5 in a thriller which lasted two hours and seven minutes.
