Mladenovic beats Kvitova, plays Barthel in Paris Open SFs

In the first of the night matches 3rd seed Marion Bartoli of France took on the unseeded Mona Barthel of Germany. Barthel, ranked at 45, topped the tournament’s 5th seed Roberta Vinci, in three sets in the second round to make it through to the quarter finals. Bartoli had a bye and then took out Christina McHale in the second round. In the first set games went with serve until Barthel broke to go up 4-2, but Bartoli broke straight back and the set went to a breaker which Barthel took 9-7. In the second set the German took 2-0, 3-1 and 5-2 leads before Bartoli broke back to 3-5 and 4-5 before Barthel sealed the set at 6-4.

In the second night match, 2nd seed Petra Kvitova took on the unseeded Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic, ranked at 87. In the first round Mladenovic dispatched the 7th seed, Julia Goerges, before taking out Yanina Wickmayer, ranked 65 places above her. The Frenchwoman started well, taking the first set 6-3 in 39 minutes. The second set was played in a similar fashion, with Kvitova’s powerful game left in the locker room, as Mladenovic took it 6-4 to move into the semis where she will meet Mona Barthel.
