Elena Vesnina of Russia, currently ranked at number 68, took to the court in the Moorilla Hobart International on Thursday to play against Jarmila Gajdosova of Australia (formerly Slovakia) for a place in the semi finals.
Gajdosova, who got a wildcard into this tournament, is currently ranked at number 167. In a match that lasted just one hour and twenty one minutes, the Russian dismantled the Aussie’s game, prevailing 6-3 6-2 to book her place in the semi final. Although Gajdosova served six aces to Vesnina’s two aces and two double faults, Vesnina had the better stats in every other aspect of the match.
Vesnina will face off against the young American Sloane Stephens, in the bottom half of the draw, for a place in the final. The tournament’s 8 seed Stephens is living up to her rising reputation. She defeated her American compatriot, the qualifier Lauren Davis, in three close sets. Both these players are just nineteen years old. The first set went to Stephens 6-3 and the second set was won by Davis 6-4. In a great battle in the decider, Stephens eventually got the break at 5-5 to go 6-5 ahead and she held her nerve to serve out the set at 7-5 to make her first semi final of the year.
