Nishikori beats Matosevic, Mayer also through in Brisbane

No.5 seed Kei Nishikori reached the second round of the 2013 Brisbane International after defeating Australian Marinko Matosevic 7-5 6-2.

Matosevic went up a break at the beginning of the first set, but couldn´t capitalise and not only did the Japanese player claw back the break, he took the Australian´s serve once more in the 11th game just before closing out the set on his own serve.

Nishikori managed to carry the momentum into set two, finishing off the match after one hour and 42 minutes.

Also through is 6th seeded Florian Mayer who overcame Colombian Santiago Giraldo in straight sets 6-4 6-4 and will square off against the winner of the match between Marcos Baghdatis and Benjamin Mitchell next.

Finn Jarkko Nieminen needed three sets to eliminate Frenchman Julien Benneteau, prevailing 6-3 2-6 6-1, setting up a second round clash against the no.4 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov.
