Spaniard Fernando Verdasco advanced into the 3rd round of Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012 after overcoming 7th seeded Argentine Juan Monaco in straight sets 6-4 6-2.

Verdasco, who missed out some tournaments due to a writs injury, took Monaco’s serve in the third game of the first set and managed to consolidate the break for a 3-1 lead. As there were no more breaks in the set, Verdasco took a lead in the match.

The crucial moment of the second set came in the 5th game as Monaco dropped his serve once more. After the Spaniard held his serve and broke the Argentine for the third time in the match, Verdasco booked a third round encounter against Croat Cilic.

No.10 seed Marin Cilic reached round three after eliminating Martin Klizan of Slovakia 7-5 6-1.

Klizan, winner of the St.Petersburg Open, fought bravely in the first set, taking his opponent’s serve in the fifth game for a 3-2 lead. However, after dropping serve in the very next game, the set was back on track. It was Cilic who struck again in the 12th game as he broke the Slovak’s serve to love to go a set up.

Cilic carried the momentum into the second set, allowing only a single game to Klizan and improving his head to head record against the Slovak to 2-0.

In the remaining first round match, Czech Radek Stepanek overcame Australian wild card holder Lleyton Hewitt 7-5 6-1.
