In an unusual semi final afternoon at the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg 2012 tournament, none of the four competitors were seeded as the last seed standing number 1 Roberta Vinci was eliminated by Venus Williams in the quarter final round; and all of them have suffered from varying degrees of injury or illness in the recent past. First on court were Monica Niculescu of Romania and Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia. The experienced Hantuchova had a rough time as her serve, usually one of her strongest weapons, was on holiday and her serve stats were pretty disastrous, while Niculescu capitalised on her opponent’s errors and ran out an easy winner, 6-1 6-3 in an hour and seven minutes.

The second semi saw Venus Williams take on Andrea Petkovic, both of whom have played little this year because of their injuries. In the first set games went with serve until the 7th game, when Williams got the first break. She then held, but Petkovic broke back and also held to level the score and then went on to take the next two games and the set at 7-5. The second set went with serve to 4-4 when Williams again got the first break to lead 5-4 and she held her serve to take the set 6-4. The deciding set went with serve to 3-3 and yet again it took two breaks for Williams to get to 5-4 and be able to serve out the set, which she did on her second match point for 6-4 in a marathon two hours and thirty eight minutes, despite serving 15 double faults to 6 aces during the match.
