Tsonga and Tipsarevic forced to retire from Valencia Open

No.2 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and third seeded Janko Tipsarevic were both forced to withdraw from their Valencia Open 2012 matches after a few games played.

Frenchman Tsonga, who is in 8th place in the race for London, suffered some back problems while he was trailing 3-1 against the Belgian Xavier Malisse in today’s first round match.

Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia pulled out of his encounter against Gilles Simon of France when 4-5 down.

In the other first round matches, Austrian Jurgen Melzer overcame Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-3 6-3, American Sam Querrey defeated Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3 7-6 (4) and Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov eliminated Italy’s Filippo Volandri 6-3 7-6 (5).
