Croat Marin Cilic needed 1 hour and 33 minutes to advance into the second round of the 2012 Shanghai Rolex Masters as he defeated Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot in straight sets 7-5 6-3.

10th seeded Cilic, who overpovered Kubot from the baseline and served quite well throughout the whole match (producing 8 aces), will meet Slovak Klizan in round two.

Martin Klizan, winner of St.Petersburg Open, reached the next round after beating Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil with a 6-3 6-4 scoreline. This will be a re-match between the Croat and the Slovak player as Cilic managed to overcome Klizan in this year’s US Open fourth round.

Also through is Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, who eliminated Go Soeda of Japan also in straight sets 6-2 6-4. After Verdasco managed to break his opponent four times and dominated on his own serve, he set up a second round clash against the Argentine Juan Monaco.

In other first round matches, 16th seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber ousted American Ryan Harrison 6-4 6-4, Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov dismissed Pablo Andujar of Spain 7-5 6-3 and American Sam Querrey overcame Chinese wild card holder Zhe Li with a 6-3 6-1 scoreline.
