Marcos Baghdatis won a three set marathon against 12th seeded Milos Raonic in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012, winning after three tiebreaks 7-6 (4) 6-7 (5) 7-6 (3).

Baghdatis, Australian Open 2006 finalist, held his nerve in the first set as he battled it out in a ‘breaker’, taking a lead in the match.

The second set was just as close as the first one, but this time it was the world no.14 Raonic who got the upper hand at the end of it, levelling the encounter at one set apiece.

The Cypriot had a massive chance to serve out the match after he broke Raonic in the 11th game of the decider, but failed to close it out and another ‘breaker’ had to determine the winner of today’s second round. Baghdatis kept his composure and after 2 hours and 40 minutes of play, he booked a third round encounter against the Frenchman Tsonga.

No.5 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had to fight hard fot his spot in the last 16 of this year’s draw as his countryman Benoit Paire proved to be a hard nut to crack. Eventually, Tsonga prevailed with a 7-6 (7) 7-5 scoreline in a match that saw nine breaks of serve.

Elsewhere, Czech Radek Stepanek upset 11th seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet in straight sets 6-4 6-4. After losing the first set, the Frenchman got himself a break in the second set to take a 4-3 lead, just to drop the next three games and hand Stepanek the victory.
