Agnieszka Radwanska won her 55th match of the year on Tuesday when she defeated the Chinese wild card holder Shuai Zhang on the Lotus Court after a tough battle which showcased some wonderful tennis from both sides of the net. Zhang, ranked 140 places below Radwanska, the world number 3, came to court with a great attitude and took her game to the Pole with some great forehand and drive volley winners which defied her lowly ranking, exciting the partisan home spectators and giving Radwanska some serious opposition. The final score to Radwanska was 6-2 6-3, but it does not show the extent of the exciting match, including Zhang’s break in the third game of the second set to take a 3-2 lead and a more than 13 minute long eighth game which the Pole eventually won on her fifth game point to enable her to serve out to love and take the match.

She will face off against Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain in the third round. The Spaniard, who had to qualify for the main draw, took out another qualifier, Britain’s Laura Robson, in a close match which she won 7-5 6-3. Robson’s strong leftie serve let her down in this match, as Dominguez Lino won the majority of service points, as well as her break points, which enabled her to take this match in just over an hour and a half.

Radwanska and Dominguez Lino will do battle in the third round for a place in the quarter finals.
