After a couple of hours of rain delay, play should resume shortly in New York…

The weather forecast wasn’t looking so good for today at the Flushing Meadows, with the matches at Arthur Ashe and Luis Armstrong stadiums being interrupted due to rain.

Tuesday’s Matches:

Victoria Azarenka def. Sam Stosur 6-1  4-6  7-6 (5)

David Ferrer – Richard Gasquet 7-5  7-6 (2)  4-3 (Gasquet 15-30 on serve) – rain delay

Maria Sharapova – Marion Bartoli 0-4 (Bartoli 15-30 on serve) – the match has been postponed until tomorrow.

In the only finished match so far today, world no.1 Victoria Azarenka overcame defending champion Sam Stosur in a three set thriller to book herself a place in the 2012 US Open semifinals. After the Belarusian cruised through the rain-interrupted opening set, Stosur found her rhythm and after winning the second set, she forced a decider. The Australian recovered from two breaks down in the third set, taking it to a tiebreak. However, as Azarenka took a quick 4-0 lead in the ‘breaker’, Stosur couldn’t find her way back into the match and going down 7-5, she won’t be able to defend her last year’s title.

Azarenka will play the winner of the match Sharapova – Bartoli for a place in the final.
