A day after becoming the forth qualifier for the year end WTA championships to be played in Istanbul this year, Agnieszka Radwanska followed her younger sister, Ursula, into the third round at the Toray Pan Pacific tournament being played in Tokyo. Having reached no. 2 on the WTA rankings a few weeks ago and now at no. 3, Radwanska took to the court against former world number one Jelena Jankovic, who has been on a slide for some months now and is not even seeded in this event. The polish player reached the next round with a 6-2  7-5 victory.

After Jankovic broke Radwanska in the first game of the match and then held her serve to go 2-0 ahead, the remainder of the set went Radwanska’s way with ease, with her taking the next six games and the set at 6-2. Jankovic was having a nightmare and absolutely nothing went her way. The same pattern continued in set two until Radwanska was 3-1 ahead, when Jankovic suddenly found some winning shots and broke back to 2-3 and then held for 3-3. The level of tennis rose dramatically with the score going to 4-4 and then 5-5 with some wonderful rallies, great overhead lobs and excellent net play. Radwanska held for 6-5 and, after some astounding rallies of 20 shots and more, finally clinched the second set 7-5. She will next meet the young American Jamie Hampton, who defeated Kaia Kanepi in three sets.

In other second round matches, Caroline Wozniacki overcame Daniela Hantuchova with a 7-6 (3)  6-1 scoreline and Angelique Kerber eliminated wild card holder Ayumi Morita 6-3  6-4.
