Novak Djokovic vs Andy Murray Live US Open 2012 Men’s Final

Share & Comment

– Murray is more calm and collected than anyone in his position has a right to be. Interviewer asks about Lendl’s influence, the coach almost breaks into a smile.

– Scenes reminiscent of the Australian Open as both finalists look on their last legs. Novak gracious in congratulating his opponent for a ‘deserved’ win and the Murray team too. Disappointed no doubt but there will be other days.

– Murray looks more exhausted then delighted but he’s got the rest of his life to enjoy this win. 76 years since Fred Perry won the US Open, Andy Murray does the same. Hats off to Novak Djokovic too for an amazing attempted comeback, but Murray deserved the win tonight.

Andy Murray wins the US Open!

–  Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 2-6 Murray

Three championship points and Murray takes the second one!

–  Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 2-5 Murray

Djokovic seems weary, quickly behind 0-30. The Serb desperately needs his first serve to show up but lacking that he unleashes a barrage of backhands instead for a point. Novak goes long and his appetite for long rallies in waning. Break point… taken! Murray is one game away from winning his first grand slam.

–  Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 2-4 Murray

Dynamic serving from Murray and he holds to love. What a time to come up with the goods. Two games away now.

–  Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 2-3 Murray

At 15-15 Djokovic steals a point with a serve volley but Murray’s return on the next point takes it to 30-30. Novak smashes the ball through the court time after time and finally subdues Murray, next it is Murray’s turn to run the show and it is deuce. The Serb turns it up to 11 once more for advantage and hits hard again for the hold.

–  Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 1-3 Murray

Murray serves for what would surely be a decisive advantage but almost inevitably Djokovic raises his game and forces three break points. Solid one-two combination saves the first one but Murray pokes a lame shot wide and Novak is on the scoreboard in the fifth.

–  Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 0-3 Murray

No matter where Djokovic drives the ball, Murray seems to get it back somehow and forces deuce. Is the Serb discouraged by this superhuman display of tracking? He answers in kind for advantage but Murray takes it back to deuce. Break point for Murray and this would be a massive step towards the line. Second serve and an error gives him the break and suddenly the finish line is within sight.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 0-2 Murray

This game goes to 30-30 too but Murray slams a service winner up the middle and Murray outlasts a bombardment to hold.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 0-1 Murray

Fifth set records : Novak 17-5, Andy 12-6.

Superb returning from Murray gets him a half chance at 30-30 and some more good play earns the break point. The crowd goes nuts as he breaks right at the start of the set. He’s five holds away from the title against the best returner in tennis!

Fourth set to Djokovic

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 Murray

Some grueling points see Murray advance to 40-30, despite a double fault, but an error comes and it is deuce. Djokovic is waiting for the wide serve this time and gains set point. Murray goes long under pressure and we are heading to a decider. Having secured the double break Djokovic will serve first, an advantage of sorts.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 5-3 Murray

Energy levels of both players are fluctuating and Murray seems more up of the two now. Djokovic remains committed to regular visits to the net but he gets picked off for 15-30. The Serb finds his first serve and with an ace and a service winner comes back to hold. A fine effort from Djokovic to hold his serve throughout this set so far. He is one game away from leveling the match.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 4-3 Murray

The dramatic points continue but Murray holds with relative ease. He needs to break soon or face a fifth set.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 4-2 Murray

3 hours and 42 minutes in now and the battle rages on. Murray does everything on the opening point but misses the final shot. Strong play from both players now and the game goes to deuce. Djokovic hits an ace up the tee and the next point goes atomic with a long rally of brilliant defence and attack ending with Djokovic on the floor and Murray hitting into the open court. Djokovic clamps down on the rebellion. Incredibly intense now, the sky is dark and the night atmosphere is in full swing.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 3-2 Murray

Murray races to a 40-0 lead before Novak crushes a winner. Murray takes the next point to hold.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 3-1 Murray

Suddenly Djokovic seems laboured and Murray takes over a couple of points for a break point! The Scot nets after a nervy, long rally. Djokovic is called for a time violation but it just fires the defending champion (and his dad) up more, he holds. The crowd is becoming more vocal now.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 2-1 Murray

30-30 and Murray is in trouble once more. He yields a break point and he looks very low on energy. Can he rouse himself? A first serve gets him through to deuce and he goes on to hold. The Murray second serve is being returned with interest at the moment.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 2-0 Murray

Murray shows frustration with himself as he fails to make an impression on the Djokovic serve. Shouting ‘jelly’, the Scot seems to be referring to his legs, which is worrying for his supporters. Djokovic holds looking alert and predatory.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 1-0 Murray

Djokovic goes hard after the Murray serve once more and earns two break points, cue chants of support from the stands. A reaction volley see the Serb break to continue his run and the momentum is gathering all the time. General opinion is that the wind has died down a bit now.

Third set to Djokovic!

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 6-2 Murray

0-30 as Murray ventures to the net but Novak raises his game and takes four straight points to take the game and second set.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 5-2 Murray

Break points to the Serb as he finds depth on the return. He takes the second one, banging the ball back at Murray’s feet once more.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 4-2 Murray

Break points go begging for Murray as Djokovic shows his heart and holds. The third set could be his in a couple of games now.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 3-2 Murray

Rapid fire hold from Murray, moving quickly on in the third set.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 3-1 Murray

Great shotmaking from both men, with a improvised lob by Murray the pick of the bunch, but Djokovic gets the hold.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 2-1 Murray

Djokovic gets the break with some signature clean hitting off both wings, the Serb looks ready to go.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 1-1 Murray

A gritty game sees Djokovic seal the hold with a sensational volley, the crowd roars and the Serb pumps himself up for the challenge ahead.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 0-1 Murray

Two break points for Djokovic as he attacks the Murray serve in methodical fashion but good play from Murray sees them off and he gets an important hold to start the set off.

– If Djokovic is to retain his title, he will need to win the next three sets. What is going through his mind as he sits there for the changeover? Is he steeling himself for battle? As for Murray have thoughts of the possible glory to come began to seep in? Concentration is the key.

Second set to Murray!

– Djokovic 6-7 5-7 Murray

Hard to say who the crowd are behind, both players getting good support. Murray’s retrieving skills get him ahead and then Djokovic hits a smash out to hand two set points to his opponent. First one is saved with an unreturned set but Novak goes wide with an inside out forehand and it is set Murray!

– Djokovic 6-7 5-6 Murray

As Boris Becker notes it is crunch time for the man from Dunblane and Murray digs deep to hold. Djokovic will serve for a tiebreak.

– Djokovic 6-7 5-5 Murray

Murray is on the side that both players prefer wind-wise as Djokovic serves to stay in the set. Djokovic is crushing the ball given the chance now and Murray puts one just wide under duress. Djokovic plays one of his better games to level the set… he’s escaped Murray’s clutches once more.

– Djokovic 6-7 4-5 Murray

Murray dumps into the net, not a great start, and does the same again to fall to 0-30. A long rally ends the same way, although Djokovic’s hitting is the primary cause this time. Three break points to the Serb. Novak goes long with his return on the first, but Murray goes long and hands the break over.

A broken sting sees the first point go to Novak, he follows it with an error and an ace, his third so far. Holds to 15, Murray will now serve for the second set.

– Djokovic 6-7 2-5 Murray

Still too many errors coming easy from Djokovic and Murray takes advantage to hold to love and move within striking distance of the first set.

– Djokovic 6-7 2-4 Murray

Both players are still using a great deal of slice on the backhand, like a match from the 1980s at times, probably in response to the wind. But while Murray seems to relish the tactical possibilities of this, Djokovic seems frustrated by the necessity of reigning in his groundstrokes. The Serb saves a break point and gets out the game with serve intact.

– Djokovic 6-7 1-4 Murray

Perhaps feeling he’s got nothing to lose in this set, Djokovic swings freely to gain two break points. He takes the first, he’s still a break down but is this the start of a comeback?

– Djokovic 6-7 0-4 Murray

The wind is still visible, rippling the players clothes and hair. Novak can’t seem to get a grip and slide to 0-30, and a couple of points later and it is yet more break points to Murray. A fabulous rally and Murray breaks again. The Scot is in top form now.

– Djokovic 6-7 0-3 Murray

Andy presses on, aware he needs to make hay while Djokovic is out of sorts. A easy hold and he is halfway to the second set.

– Djokovic 6-7 0-2 Murray

Average rally length is 8.7 shots, which is long by any standards. Murray is playing with confidence now and gets to three break points… he gets the break and Djokovic need to start channeling his inner warrior and dig deep. The Serb seems a little impatient at the moment.

– Djokovic 6-7 0-1 Murray

Murray bangs the forehand for 40-15 and the Scot is able to start the second set with a hold. Things calming down after the maelstrom end of set one.

– Incredible tie break that Murray takes after holding several set points.

First set to Murray!

– Djokovic 6-7 Murray

2-1 Djokovic serves first and then  hangs tough in a long rally to grab a mini break, Murray holds his second point on serve.

3-2 Murray gets the break back with some great play despite some mind bending sliding by the Serb. Djokovic solid on the next point.

4-2 The standard of play is getting high now, and Djokovic produces one more great shot for another mini break.

4-3 A body serve from Murray knocks Djokovic backwards, nice tactics to bring that one into play now.

5-4 Another punishing rally but Djokovic just about stays in control. Murray gets the break back on the next point though.

5-6 Djokovic slips and Murray takes the point, Murray takes the next and it is set point to the Scot.

6-6 Djokovic rises to the occasion, slamming the ball. Both players have won 40 points each in the match, so close.

6-7 Djokovic goes long and it is another set point to Murray.

7-7 Murray blows a volley… big chance gone.

7-8 set point number three for Murray after the Serb goes long.

8-8 Marathon rally sees the nerves jangle before Murray goes wide.

8-9 Murray keeps it deep to force the error.

9-9 Murray misfire on forehand.

9-10 Murray solid and gets a forehand to the open court.

10-10 Ace from Novak!

10-11 Murray forces the error, another set point.

10-11 Murray bangs a big first serve in but it is a let. He goes big again and he’s got the set.

–  Djokovic 6-6 Murray

Sir Alex Ferguson is in the Murray box now, rooting no doubt for his fellow Scot at this testing time. Great first point from the Scot, drawing applause from even Djokovic. ‘If you want to win something special, you’ve got to do something special’ says Boris Becker… he would know after all. The Scot thumps down his first ace at 30-30, timely. Murray holds and it is a tiebreak, he has been more consistent over the set but Djokovic seems to have put his early woes behind him now.

–  Djokovic 6-5 Murray

Djokovic impresses, following up serves and not letting Murray in the rallies. Another easy hold for the Serb, who is playing better now. Murray will serve to stay in the set for the second time.

–  Djokovic 5-5 Murray

An unforced error puts it to 15-15 and the tension is palpable. Murray digs himself a hole on the next point but gets out with a stunning backhand. Gutsy stuff from Murray on the next point too, staying patient and waiting until he has a smash to seal the point. Murray holds.

–  Djokovic 5-4 Murray

Novak rolls through his service game to love, finishing it with a winner. All of a sudden Murray will be serving to stay in the set.

–  Djokovic 4-4 Murray

Can Murray keep his lead? Relatively conservative with his first serve and Djokovic comes in to seal the point eventually with a volley. Drama as both players hit reaction volleys at each other but Murray goes long and it is three break points to Nole. Great defence from Murray on the second break point but Djokovic eventually hits it beyond him for the break. A lot of slice on the backhand from both players and the quality, if not the drama and tension, is still low. All square.

–  Djokovic 3-4 Murray

Great backhand pass up the line by Murray to move ahead but a correspondingly bad error makes it 15-15. Djokovic unleashes a big forehand and Murray complains that the let machine went off in the middle of the rally, a few boos so the Scot doesn’t labour the point though. A Djokovic error and a Murray forehand winner see it to deuce on the Serb’s serve again. Murray can’t get the double break though and Novak hangs in there.

–  Djokovic 2-4 Murray

Murray comes out knowing a hold will give him a decent chance of taking this first set. At 15-15 a massive 54 shot rally sees some fantastic shots before Murray slices into the net. Two solid serves see Murray to 40-30 and the game is eventually his. Djokovic looked more patient there.

–  Djokovic 2-3 Murray

A long rally that ends with Djokovic volleying long takes it to 15-15 and another double fault put him behind once more on his serve. The Djokovic radar is still not working and yet another double fault hands another break to Murray. The world number two does not look happy and passes the time on the changeover by smashing his racquet.

–  Djokovic 2-2 Murray

The players are finding their feet now and Murray takes the first easiest hold of the final, priceless. Some good defensive movement from Djokovic – he seems more comfortable too.

–  Djokovic 2-1 Murray

Novak double faults, just his eighth of the championship, to slide to 0-30. He nets during the next point to hand Murray more break opportunities… he hasn’t won a point on serve yet but gets one now as Murray goes long. Murray makes an unforced error and is then muscled out by a textbook point – deuce. Murray changes pace to wrong foot the Serb and it is another break point. A spoon by the Scot into net sends it back to deuce, and eventually Djokovic holds. Nerves are showing and mistakes abound.

–  Djokovic 1-1 Murray

Much speculation that the wind is making a influence. Blowing behind Murray now he struggles on serve as Djokovic returns aggressively for 0-40. Andy saves the first break point with a good pick up, a service winner saves another… just one to go. First serve but Novak gets into the rally and gets the break. All level

–  Djokovic 0-1 Murray

First point goes to an extended rally before Novak dumps it into the net. Evidence of the wind blowing hard. Murray goes 0-30 up, and now it is three break points to Murray in the first game! Lendl looks impassive as Djokovic hits wide and it is first blood to Murray!

– Djokovic to serve….

– The flags are flying in the breeze at Flushing Meadow. Wind will be a factor here and Murray handled that better at the semi-final stage.

– Andy Murray will ascend to the number three ranking irrespective of the result tonight, supplanting Rafael Nadal.

– Both men look focused and composed. The knock up begins.

– Novak Djokovic pays respect to his opponent and says it should be a good match.

– In the pre-match interview Andy Murray says he is more mature than when he made his first US Open final back in 2008. He says this could make the difference.
