Murray 3-6 7-6 6-2 6-0 Cilic

Murray is out on court waiting for Cilic before time is called like an impatient Adidas-clad executioner. The final game is a formality and the world number four survives a scare to move ahead to a semi-final against the winner of Tomas Berdych and Roger Federer. Marin Cilic was unable to maintain his intensity while the Scot became stronger the longer the match went on.

Despite his best efforts Cilic can’t stop the Murray tide overwhelming him once more; another break and surely that is game over?

Cilic gets going once more and gains two break points, the first Murray defends by dominating Cilic’s forehand with his own double handed backhand. Two more points are secured by the Scot before Cilic takes it back to deuce and Murray then goes long to gift another break point.  Cilic can’t take advantage though and Murray wins his ninth game in a row.

Murray dominates the first two point and Cilic throws in a double fault to hand three break points. Murray sweeps the game to secure the double break and the match is one way traffic now.

As Murray approaches cruise control, it is hard to believe he was on the brink of a two set deficit not so long ago. He is a step ahead of Cilic in the rallies and reels off another hold.

Some masterful tennis from Murray, driving his opponent back and finishing the point at the net. The Scot secures the early break and Cilic’s mountain just got a whole lot bigger.

Murray takes the third set

Murray shrugs aside some strong Croat resistance to hold serve and go 2-1 up. The Scot is the hot favourite now, can Cilic find the strength to mount a challenge in the fourth?

Now in the ascendancy Murray starts to draw the ball around the court with Cilic chasing after it: 0-30. The Scot returns a first serve superbly for three break points and takes the second one to move within a game of taking the third set.

Cilic steps in to take a 15-30 lead against the Murray serve but can’t stay ahead. Murray gets away with a very slow second serve but a slamming return by Cilic on the next point takes it to deuce. Murray eventually holds with a serve out wide followed by an ace up the tee. Cilic is still pushing though.

Murray forces the game to deuce, he seems to be finding the Croat’s weak spot at the moment. Murray moves to advantage and then plays an authoritative point to break. Is the world number four ready to assert his game?

Things are a bit tougher this time but Murray holds again with two big serves from 30-30.

Things keep ticking over smoothly with another easy hold, this time for Cilic.

Murray holds to love, both players seem to be regathering their thoughts after the crazy second set.

So after all the drama things are back to all square except it’s now a best of three match. Cilic holds comfortably.

Murray lets a 2-0 lead slide to 2-2 via unforced errors and another see the mini-break go to Cilic. Murray thinks about smashing his racquet as Cilic wins his fourth point in a row but Murray gets the mini-break back to make it 3-4. A long rally terminates with Cilic hitting the net and Murray then takes it to 5-4. Cilic hits long and Murray has two set points… another error from the Croat means Murray takes the second set after coming back from 5-1 down!

Cilic shows some steel to hold in the face of good play by Murray… Tie break time!

Murray’s march continues with a love hold – how must Cilic be feeling now? The force is with the Scot now.

The times might be-a-changing and Murray surges to 0-40 and three break points. A big serve does for the first one and the second one, first serve again and the Croat puts away an overhead to reach deuce. Brilliant play by Murray as he ends the next point with a touch volley and a double hands Murray the break. Its all square!

Murray  gets a comfortable hold finally and the pressure is now on Cilic to serve out.

Murray pulls out all the stops to get to deuce. The stands are filling up after the afternoon session finished on Ashe, can this pump up the atmosphere? Murray seems to be going for more now and earns a break point… he gets a break back!

Lendl has taken his cap off and his staring eyes bore into his charge, Andy looks exhausted and the game goes to deuce before holding with an ace. Cilic will have the new balls to serve for the set though.

Murray’s attempts to get the comeback car started stall on the power of the Cilic serve for the first two points. Two big backhand return winners move it to 30-30 though. Another great backhand and its break point time once more. Its not to be though and Cilic moves within a game of a two set lead.

The number three seeds slides out to 0-40 with unforced errors and is in danger of falling terminally behind in this set. Another error at 15-40 sees Murray cede yet another break.

The sun is setting over NYC and also on Andy Roddick’s career as he loses to Juan Martin del Potro over on Ashe. Back with Murray-Cilic, the Croat continues to give the ball hell and Murray can’t seem to find patterns of play that work in his favour. Easy hold.

Cilic continues to punish any second serves that come his way and Murray has to scramble to stay ahead in this game and hold seve. Murray has only won 5 of 18 points on second serve.

Murray is slipping behind in even the longer rallies, Cilic taking the ball early whenever possible. Big Marin shows great touch at the net to move to 40-15 but, having outmaneuvered Murray misses with a drop shot. Murray gets to deuce, can he strike back? Cilic finds the net again and its break point once more, Cilic shuts the door with a service winner only for an unforced error to open it to Murray once more. Cilic can’t find his first serve but pummels Murray off the court with some brutal hitting. A third break point is earned though and this game is becoming more essential for both players as it goes on. Back to deuce after Cilic dominates the rally after a good serve and then its advantage Cilic for the first time. Murray goes wide and Cilic hangs on to his serve.

Some talk of the slower court and low key afternoon atmosphere playing against the British no 1. Murray has certainly been second best so far and yields another break point. A long rally sees Cilic take control and breaks for the third time in the match

Cilic slams a first serve to open the game, apparently he is 31-0 after winning the first set this season. Ominous stats but Murray ups his return game to get to 30-30. Big point coming up… Murray missed a forehand and reviews it to no avail. Set point and Cilic’s forehand power sees him through to take the first set.

After so much rain the sky looks clear over New York now. Murray is knocked back by a ferocious drive but its even-stevens as he hits a similar shot into the net. Good defense by Murray but the game goes to deuce as Cilic’s ball striking overwhelms Murray’s movement. Murray drops short and the Croat takes the opportunity break point… second serve and Cilic has the break. Murray throws his racquet to the ground in disgust!

An error from Cilic going for an atomic forehand followed a dump into the net sees him fall 0-30 behind. Murray is in the hunt for a break here and Cilic double faults to give the Scot three break points. An ace and a service winner take it to 30-40 but a long point plays into Murray’s hand and he gets the break.

Murray changes his footwear during the changeover but it doesn’t stop him losing the first point of his service game. Cilic gets a bit carried away and overplays a forehand before Murray ups his game to hold serve.

Big ground strokes from Cilic earn him the first point and Murray can’t make the return on the next point. The Croat booms a huge forehand winner for 40-0 and goes on to take the game.

Murray takes the first point with a backhand putaway and follows it with a serve-volley for the second. An unforced error hands apoint to Cilic but Murray gets his first game on the scoreboard.

The first two points are shared before Cilic misses a backhand up the line. Murray slams Cilic’s second serve way long and its level at 30-30. Missing his first serve again but gets away with it to advance to 40-30 and then thumps an inside out forehand increase his lead.

Murray mishits a drop shot for 0-15 then hits a regulation ball long to fall to 0-30. Cilic earns three break points and Murray goes long again to hand the first break over to the Croat.

Cilic serves first and takes the first two points. Murray dumps a forehand in the net and Cilic goes on to take the game comfortably.

– Play should begin in about ten minutes.

– Andy Murray and Marin Cilic are making their way onto the Louis Armstrong court, having been switched from Ashe due to the rain delay.

– This match is the third scheduled on the Arthur Ashe stadium today. Maria Sharapova and Marion Bartoli will complete their quarter final after which Andy Roddick will attempt to prolong his career against Juan Martin del Potro.

They last met at this year’s Wimbledon, where the Brit prevailed in straight sets but their sole previous encounter at the US Open (in 2009) saw the Croat defeat Murray.
