Top seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus defeated Russia’s Maria Sharapova in three sets 3-6  6-2  6-4 and will get a chance to play for her first US Open title.

After a slow start into the match, Azarenka stepped up her game and began moving Sharapova around the court with a lot more precision. Both players were exchanging heavy blows that kept the New York crowd entertained.

As the world no.1 stormed to take the second set and levelled the match at one set apiece, there was going to be a short break due to the heat rules. The deciding set offered some more heavy groundstrokes and roars, with both players holding their serves until the 10th game of the set, when Sharapova was serving to stay in the match. Azarenka took her chances and despite the Russian averting one matchpoint, she failed to save the second one and the Belarussian moves for the first time of her career into the final of this fourth Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Azarenka will play the winner of the match between Serena Williams and Sara Errani next.
