Tennis fans across the world can rejoice as Rafael Nadal recently announced that he will return to tennis, although they’ve a 7-month wait ahead of them.

Although he won’t be competing in the US Open at Flushing Meadows when it begins next Monday, he has confirmed that he will be participating in an exhibition match at Madison Square Garden in New York City next March. The BNP Paribas Showdown will see the Spaniard face-off against the 2009 US Open Champion Juan Martin del Potro in a match that is sure to delight Rafa fans in the Big Apple.

The world number 3 hasn’t played a professional match since his shock second-round exit at Wimbledon earlier in June. As well as pulling out of the last Grand Slam of the year, Nadal also missed out on the opportunity to play at the London Olympics, where he also had to forgo flag-bearing duties for his native country due to his ongoing knee problems.

In addition to featuring matches between these top male players, the BNP Paribas Showdown will also showcase exhibition matches between 2012’s comeback queen Serena Williams and current WTA world number 1 Victoria Azarenka. Williams has already made quick work of Azarenka this season thanks to her triumph at Wimbledon, and her previous victory over sister Venus in 2009 at the same event has made her the favourite in this match.

Tickets for the event are scheduled to go on sale on Tuesday 9th October
