Seeded players Janko Tipsarevic and David Ferrer advanced into the second round of 2012 US Open. Brian Baker and Grega Zemlja also book a second round ticket, Viktor Troicki gets eliminated by Cedrik Marcel Stebe.

Eight-seeded Serb Tipsarevic did not make his life easy against 129th-ranked French Guillaume Rufin. First two sets had a similar scenario: 28-years old Tipsarevic, who conquered Stuttgart earlier this summer, managed to break his opponent once in each of the sets, but as he dropped two of his own service games, he handed Rufin a 2-0 lead in the match. However, he Serb is a well known fighter on the court and he proved it once again. Raising the level of his game, he staged a great escape as he stormed to take the following three sets in great fashion. He converted five out of seventeen break points while successfully holding his serve until the end of the match. Both of the players hit a number of aces (17-15 for Tipsarevic), but Rufin made a lot more unforced errors (58-32). The match ended with a 4-6  3-6  6-2  6-3  6-2 scoreline in favor of the world no. 9.

Tipsarevic will play American Baker in next round. The latter needed three sets to finish off Czech Hajek, winning 6-3  6-4  6-2.

Fourth seed Ferrer was as equally efficient in first round as he defeated Kevin Anderson 6-4  6-2  7-6 (3).  The South African was not capable of surprising the Spaniard, who reached the fourth round in the last two years here at Flushing Meadows. Ferrer was spotless with his serving and didn’t allow Anderson a single break point in the first two sets while taking the South African’s serve three times to take a two sets lead in the match. With no breaks of serve, the third set was decided in a tie-break that was dominated by the Spanish matador. He will face Dutch qualifier Igor Sijsling next, who got the better of Gimeno Traver in three straight sets 7-5  6-3  6-4.

Slovenian qualifier Grega Zemlja was also successful in his first ever main draw match at the US Open. 99th-ranked Zemlja beat Brazilian Mello in three sets: 7-5  7-6 (3)  7-5 and booked a second round encounter against German Cedrik Marcel Stebe, who eliminated 29th-seeded Serb Victor Troicki in four sets 6-4  6-4  3-6  6-2.
