Five time champion and top seed at the 2012 US Open Roger Federer advanced to the third round with ease as he outclassed German Bjorn Phau 6-2  6-3  6-2 in exactly 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Federer, who came into this year’s tournament on top form having beaten Djokovic in the Cincinnati final, hit 44 winners, 15 aces and break his opponent’s serve 5 times on his way to a more than comfortable victory.

The Swiss world no.1 will play Spaniard Fernando Verdasco next, who overcame fellow countryman Albert Ramos 7-6 (4)  5-7  7-6 (5)  6-4.

Federer leads the head to head against Verdasco with 4-0, but their last meeting took place a while back – at the 2009 ATP World Tour finals in London.

Also through to the next round is Frenchman Gilles Simon, who eliminated qualifier Jimmy Wang 6-4  4-6  6-4  6-4 and will play Mardy Fish in round three. Fish managed to stage a huge comeback as he came back from two sets down to defeat former world no.3 Nikolay Davydenko, winning 4-6  6-7 (4)  6-2  6-1  6-2.
