Dolgopolov beats unlucky Levine, Tomic also advances at US Open

Alexandr Dolgopolov was a step away from a fast 2012 US Open exit, but managed to advance to the second round after prevailing in five sets. Bernard Tomic turned around his first round match, too.

Unseeded American Jesse Levine was on the verge of surprising fourteenth-seeded Ukrainian Dolgopolov, who pulled off an almost unbelievable turnaround. Levine achieved a break in each of the first two sets which was enough for 2-0 lead after one hour and ten minutes of play. Dolgopolov lost another two service games in beginning of the third set and found himself 0-4 down. At that point, he was probably the only one believing he could make a comeback. Levine was a point away from taking a 5-1 lead, but gave away his serve instead. This year’s Washington winner Dolgopolov ultimately broke his opponent twice more and grabbed the set after converting his fourth set point.

The complexion of the match changed drastically after that. Dolgopolov clearly used the momentum and stormed through the remaining two sets in less than an hour. The Ukrainian thus proceeded into second round with a 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory. His next opponent will be Marcos Baghdatis, who defeated Matthias Bachinger in a four hour long marathon. Steve Darcis and Stanislas Wawrinka are also through in that part of the draw and will face each other in the second round.

Australian Tomic and his ATP rankings neighbour Argentine Carlos Berlocq played four sets in their first round US Open clash. Tomic was not too happy about giving away two serves in the opening stages of the match that handed Berlocq the first set. The 19-years old Australian prospect then took control of the match. Reducing his unforced errors and breaking down Berlocq’s defence, he clinched the remaining three sets and entered the second round with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory. He is going to challenge 20th-seeded Roddick for a place in the third round, which could be his first 3rd round appearance here at Flushing Meadows.

Another second round encounter in this part of the draw will be played between Fabio Fognini and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
