Barthel beats Hantuchova in New Haven, Errani and Kirilenko also through

German Mona Barthel started her New Haven campaign with a straight sets 6-3  7-5 win over Slovak Daniela Hantuchova.

This was the first meeting between the two players, with Hantuchova having 5 WTA career titles to her name against Barthel’s one title.

However, the Slovak has been struggling with her form recently (she had to withdraw from Roland Garros due to a foot injury and hasn’t quite managed to get back into full swing, losing in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships, as well as going out in the opening round at the Rogers Cup and coming up short against Errani in the second round of last week’s Cincinnati Open).

Barthel will face 7th seeded Maria Kirilenko next, who overpowered Israel’s Shahar Peer 6-2  6-2.

Also through to the next round is 2012 French Open finalist Sara Errani of Italy after overcoming American wild card holder Bethanie Mattek-Sands in straight sets 6-4  7-5. She will play Carla Suarez Navarro next, who eliminated Agnes Szavay of Hungary 7-6 (3)  6-4.

In the other first round matches, 5th seed Marion Bartoli of Italy dismissed British wild card holder Laura Robson 6-3  6-3 and American Sloane Stephens defeated Tamira Paszek of Austria with a 6-3  6-1 scoreline.
