Canadian Milos Raonic set up a second round match against Roger Federer at the Mutua Madrid Open after defeating Argentine David Nalbandian 6-4  6-4.

Raonic never really looked under pressure throughout the match. He broke Nalbandian in his opening service game and comfortably served out the first set.

The crucial break in the second set came in the 9th game, and after Raonic taking a 5-4 lead, he had no problems closing out the set and the match.

It will be a very interesting second round encounter between Raonic and Federer. Their last meeting was in Indian Wells this year, where the Swiss prevailed in three sets.

12th seed Frenchman Gael Monfils beat the last week’s BMW Open Munich champion Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in three hard fought sets 7-5  6-7 (2)  6-3.

This was Monfils’ first match since Miami and with this win, he improved the head to head record against the German to 7-1.

Monfils will face Russian qualifier Igor Andreev next, who overcame Juan Carlos Ferrero in yesterday’s first round match.

Also through to the second round is Italy’s Andreas Seppi, who defeated Michael Llodra of France 7-5  6-4 and the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, after beating Belgian Olivier Rochus 6-4  7-6 (3).
